Happy weekend, friends. It's rainy and cold and dreary here in the midlands of South Carolina, but the weatherman promises sunny skies will return. I believe! In the meantime I'm wrapped up in warm layers making winter foods that soothe the soul: Beef 'n Bean Chili, THE BEST Butternut Squash soup, my Mom's "Mock" Lasagne. I'm delighted to tell you we're FINALLY more or less settled in our new home and LORD HAVE MERCY am I glad. My laptop is in working order sitting atop the desk in my precious little studio, and for the first time in many, many weeks, life has about it a growing sense of normalcy. So why not? LET'S ALL GO BARRELING INTO THE HOLIDAYS. Bring it on; I'm fortified. It's a wondrous time of year!!! XXOO, Cathy

Amazon Prime's Modern Love. It is a revelation, my friends, a new series of beautifully wrought single stories based on the weekly column in the NY Times. The acting is flawless, the music is wonderful, and the stories are surprising and uplifting. It's so, so good. We just watched Episode 5--At the Hospital, an Interlude of Clarity--and I cannot stop thinking about it. Also Episode 3--Take Me as I Am, Whoever I Am, starring Anne Hathaway. And, also--well, just all of them.

I am the last person on earth to read The Glass Castle, a memoir chronicling a wildly dysfunctional (and yet, oddly, appealing at times) childhood, which I listened to via audiobook while unpacking. I was fascinated with Walls' story and see why it was on the bestseller list for more than four years. Plus a few years ago in a writing workshop, my hero writer, Lee Smith, used Walls' first page as an example of a perfectly written one. That, alone, is reason enough to pick it up.
