Number 44

the one that sings

2018-12-28_15-40-02_264 2

It may be that when we no longer know what to do,

we have come to our real work and when we no longer know

which way to go, we have begun our real journey.

The mind that is not baffled is not employed.

The impeded stream is the one that sings.

—Wendell Berry
NOT LONG AGO I came upon these words from the ever-so-sage Wendell Berry, and in the time since I have returned to them again and again. There is so much to consider these days, it seems to me; there is so much change upon us.

It is a fitting thing to notice, I suppose, this being October,

the liminal season.

The time for softening, for sifting. For letting go.
The time when, nevertheless, Mother Nature is bold and insistent in her reminder:

This world is a beautiful place.

Yes. And never more so than in October.

WHEN TEACHER BECOMES STUDENT // Kathryn Davé came into my life as a young copywriting apprentice and blossomed into a mentor, of sorts, for me. She is the reason I launched The Daily Grace blog way back in 2010, and she is equally the reason I had the courage and audacity some years later to scribble the first terrifying pages of a novel. I remain grateful for Kathryn's insights and encouragement every day, and I am overjoyed that all these years (and for her, a husband and three baby boys) later she, too, has returned to creative writing via a newsletter and "dispatch" called Yard Violet. Her insights are strong and worthy; her writing is exquisite. Give Yard Violet a look, then subscribe.

I am an overthinker, and it's a trait that serves me well, oh I'd say, 5 percent of the time. Other than that, as Jon Acuff points out, what all that considering does is mostly impede my progress toward whatever thing I have decided I want to do. NO MORE. In Soundtracks: The Surprising Solution to Overthinking, Acuff shines a light on the real problems with overthinking and offers smart ways to "change the soundtracks" that take root and seem to manifest whatever reality we expect. It's a funny, practical and easy to digest read that I devoured via audio then ordered so I can study and underline. I loved this book.

The Day the Bear Came to Call

We were new to the mountains the day this bear came to call, and it tickles me to read my old accounting (from October 2016!) of the adventure that ensued. I also wonder: Was this our beloved Buddy Bear? I'm betting yes.

OVERTHINKING

is when what you think

gets in the way of

what you want.
