Legacy

Originally published in Clinch Mountain Review

Eyes black as coal
from the land of those before
mountain folk

earthly
and rare

a springtime sun spilling over high ridges
pushing pushing through
branches
their young leaves soaking
    smiling
    greengold.

She is me. Looking back
another time, another place.

A cell divided

poet, daughter,
warrior

pride.
