Thank you to my lifelong friend, Lisa Roberson, who posted this sweet, sweet story on Facebook. It touched me so deeply I asked if I could share it with you here. Joyfully, she said yes.
This is a Christmas pin I gave Dolly Countiss in 1971. She was my 5th grade teacher.
As I got older, I would visit her at her home. She sent me post cards of all her travels and celebrations. I wrote her letters of my adventures. One day I received a card in the mail from Dolly. Inside was this Christmas tree pin.
Dolly wrote, “I am sending this pin to you, it is the one you gave me when you were in the 5th grade. I have worn it to a Christmas gathering every year since then. I am 96 years old now and think it is time you start wearing it.
With great admiration, your teacher and friend, Dolly Countiss.”
I wept and I proudly wear it to a gathering, every year, at Christmas time.
