IT WAS EARLY October and Suzann and I were strolling along Main Street, enjoying the Fall Fling festivities in our small Southwest Virginia hometown. We stopped by a booth that featured pretty pottery and gorgeous wood products and we chatted with the young couple there, learning they are from Johnson City and are, in fact, the makers. Their offerings were gorgeous—really special—and Suzann decided on a sweet set of “Speckled Pine” mugs we both loved. Her transaction complete, just as we stepped away I turned back, deciding I would also buy a mug—but only one. “This will be for my holiday season coffee,” I explained. “That will be so cozy.”
My friend nodded and smiled, and our Wood & Fired packages carefully wrapped, we walked on.
That night there was knock on the door of our room at The Inn, where Tim, Stella and I were staying and where Suzann was just down the hall. She handed me a bag. “I’ve never believed in having just one,” she said.
It was another mug—of course it was another mug—and I laughed and gave her a big, heartfelt hug.

How I treasure this memory! How I adore these gorgeous these mugs.
And every time I take that first hot, milky, glorious sip of coffee, I am reminded what a stunning gift it is to have friends who are thoughtful and caring and generous. How grateful I am to have had this particular dear friend since 1966, when my family moved across the street from hers—right there up the hill from Main Street in Wise, Virginia—when Suzann and I were just six years old.
