J A N U A R Y
Slow
Extended
Easily considered
Long books and popping fires and
steaming cups of tea.
Quilts and crafts and cooking.
Soups and stews that spend the day
in simmer
then invite you, at your leisure,
to casually spoon-fill right into that perfect
wide-mouthed mug
that spends its summers
tucked in back shadows
of the coffee cup cabinet.
Soup asks so little:
A dunk of a chunk of crusty bread, or
a crumble of the lowly (but lovely) saltine.
Take it to the sofa. Go ahead!
Take your soup to the sofa and eat it right there
cross-legged
cozy
unrepentant
on the precious sofa.
January is warm,
forgiving—
bare trees
soft pillows
and candles that smell of pine;
conversations
that meander
and wind
and linger—
Ah, for love
of January.

Amen to it all. Read it with my soup cup, knees up , snuggled up on the couch 🙂
Well that makes me smile!
You make me see January in a whole new light
I’m glad since you get a lot of January in your part of the woods!
Lovely, Cathy.
Thanks, Melissa!
